ASK ME: deer head decor

1 Apr

A friend recently asked me about the ever-popular wall mounted deer head. And I still love this trend. A small one would look great grouped in a gallery style, surrounded by other frames + elements. I also like when they are mounted completely alone, over a bed or sofa. I’ve sourced a few that resemble the regular style, and others which are very unconventional, for a traditional wall decoration.

Unusual material or ultra white colour:

1890 Iron Stag HeadDeer Antler in Cast Resin, Deer Head in Cast Resin – Restoration Hardware

Colourful + cheerful:

Great design that’s good for the environment – sustainable, green products:

Patterened, punchy + graphic, other great modern pieces for your wall:

DECORATING: sneak peek!

9 Feb

(click to open) here’s a sneak peek of a project i’m working on! i’m using colourful combinations of red, orange and blue tones to create bold impact for a child’s bedroom – these colours are opposites on the colour wheel and will always intensify eachother. to tone it down a bit, i’m using grey as a neutral to balance out the brightness of the other colours. great vintage finds will add character to the space, and the prints will offer up yet another layer of graphic interest.

complementary colours + layers of multi-patterns = fun, fun, fun!

above | behind the scenes – and this isn’t a studio set. flor actually shoots
in people’s homes. how cool is that? and sometimes include the homeowners, too! for more behind the scenes snapshots, check out their blog.
here is the final shot, showcasing toy poodle in buffalo plaid. love the styling; always a fan of mixing old with new. and brilliant lighting! their team did such a great job.

i really appreciate flor’s aesthetic and authenticity in creating their catalogue. their form (new patterns, textures, colours) and function (modular carpet tile system) really surpass what carpets are about. easy and fun to customize and play around with! not to mention that they have their own return & recycle program: old flor tiles can be returned and recycled into new product.
beauty and brains all in one.

DECORATING: black + gold palette

22 Apr

glam library + residential project from kelly wearstler
impressive projects from bisazza mosaico tile company. even a gym can be transformed into a luxurious space with the right colour combination!

as an ancient material, gold embodies a warm richness and superior luxury – while black grounds a space and commands drama. together, black + gold envelope you in an ultimate feeling of lavishness. use both together for instant luxe.

DIY-ING: gallery style wall

11 Apr

when creating a gallery style wall for a work space, add interest by using a range of pieces. art, photos, beautiful images, sentimental objects + the cork board allows you to keep fabrics and other samples on hand… anything goes, the more the better! be sure to put up things that are special to you + give you inspiration.

1 i traced out all of my selected pieces on a huge roll of craft paper + cut each one out, to act as a marker on the wall. i also labelled what each paper represented just incase (blossom = cherry blossom print).

2 then i taped each template into the desired placement. i moved each piece around until i got it right + levelled. i left the computer monitor on the desk to act as a marker for how low the lowest items should be placed.

3 next, i measured the distance from the top of the cork board to where the nails would sit + marked it on the paper template.

4 i hammered the nails in place + took down the paper template.

5 the cork board was the first one to go up. i followed steps 3 + 4 for each frame and worked around the board, using its’ edges to ensure straight placement everywhere else.
